ETV HONCHO IN TROUBLE – FREEDOM OF PRESS EXAMINED:Criminals, business empires, shady businessmen, land sharks getting into “media business” as a cover for shady operations?

February 25, 2007

In view of the recent controversy over Andhra Pradesh Government’s action over ETV Mogul Ramoji Rao, famous blog Churumuri has a great post on what really constitutes “Freedom of press” and whether a line should be drawn when it comes to blindly supporting media moguls when they get away with illegal acts.

Click here to read full post from Churumuri.

Some highlights:

It is also a fact that many a time this freedom boils down to freedom of the proprietor, more than the freedom of the journalist. And this is a subject which attracts very passionate debates within the media circles.

It is no secret that dozens if not hundreds of fly-by-night operators and businessmen with dubious track records start media organisations, only as a cover for their illegal activities.

Another blog which exposes the current land scam Ramoji is embroiled in: – this blog has the latest and many news clippings in Telugu.

This blog has earlier exposed illegal activities of ETVs reporters and “stringers”. Raking up controversy when there is none, “creating” news when there is none and then reap the benefits of ratings has become the standard. When we exposed role of ETV’s Udupi contact in a massive land scam, we received several threatening notes which name dropped Ramoji’s contacts in Delhi and how Cyber Intelligence Unit of Indian Govt will come after us – as if Cyber Intelligence Unit of Indian Govt has no other job than investigate a blog based on a “complaint” by a lowly ETV stringer from a small town such as Udupi!

Churumuri’s post does raise interesting questions.

Let us take some local examples which we have covered in the blog where “freedom of press” tag has been misused by anti-social, criminal elements:

It is time to start questioning such shady characters misusing “media” tag for illegal activities and raise “freedom of press” bogey when exposed.

“KARAVALI ALE” OFFICE ATTACK:Even fellow journalists of Mangalore think B.V.Seetharam planned attack as publicity stunt / for insurance money?

Ale office attack planned by Seetharam himself? That is what other journalists think

As we dug further on why no newspapers or media in Mangalore have followed up on a serious incident as burning down of a newspaper office, it appears no one else in Mangalore media believes in B.V.Seetharam or Karaveli Ale’s story of attack either! We earlier reported how the whole incident smacks of publicity stunt by Seetharam and also smells of insurance scam.

Desperate B.V.Seetaram is now literally begging Press Club to issue a statement condemning the attack – see below. Except for his chelas and who is who of criminal – corrupt media and some imaginary names that no one can trace and exist only in B.V.Seetharam’s head, no one else has bothered about Karavali Ale’s attack drama.

No Mangalore journalists condemn Ale office attack - is it because they know the truth?

“10 lakh rupees damage” screamed the heading even before smoke from attack on Karavali Ale’s office died down.

Karavali Ale office attack mystery deepens

And now several days after the supposed “attack” there is absolute silence. It is as if 30 people simply disappeared without a trace. “Karavali Ale” is known to cultivate “sources” within the police department – mainly to blackmail honest upright officers – but even those sources can’t find the culprits? Something sure stinks in this whole “attack on Ale office” episode.

Ale office attack a drama?

We predicted earlier in this blog that whole incident smacks of self-arranged drama by B.V.Seetharam, head of this blackmailing Karavali Ale group. With revenuees drying down from his blackmailing tactics,  Press Council repeatedly coming down on Ale group for publishing baseless stories it is not a surprise if B.V.Seetharam indeed planned the whole incident to generate publicity.

Now closely check the below photo of supposed “damage”:

Karavali Ale insurance scam

Some old typewriters! Old phone book! And B.V.Seetharam wants us to believe damage from attack runs into 10 Lakh rupees? We thought typewriters went the way of dodos in 90s. Even smallest newspapers use computers for composing and here Karavali Ale wants us to believe their office had some old type writer? Insurance scam anyone?

Fact that attack conveniently took place in evening when only old security guard was at the building and then a super quick claim of “10 lakh rupees damage” sure points towards a publicity stunt and / or insurance scam aimed at gullible and clueless. We sincerely hope Mangalore police and insurance companies do not fall into this trap by Karavali Ale group.

Karavali Ale header Karavali Ale office attacked - violence is not the answer for blackmail journalism of B.V.Seetharam’s Karavali Ale

According to reports reaching us, some miscreants attacked “Karavali Ale” – a sleazy blackmailing newspaper published from Mangalore – and destroyed equipment and property.

GandhiWhile we at this blog have consistently exposed “Karavali Ale” and its Editor B.V.Seetharam’s blackmail journalism, we strongly condemn any violent attack and destruction of property.

We live in a democracy and even though Karavali Ale fits description of “fatherless baby news-maker” category as described by Chief Justice of Karnataka Mr.Cyriac Joseph (click here to read more about Cyriac Joseph’s observation on sleazy journalism by the likes of Karavali Ale media), there are checks and balances to address any issues instead of resorting to violence.

 Ale attack for insurance

While it is not known who is behind the attack on Karavali Ale’s office, some reports indicate it may be a well planned insider job by B.V.Seetharam himself.

This blog has exposed Karavali Ale repeatedly many times in recent times.

  • Click here to read allegations on how B.V.Seetharam and Karavali Ale accepted lakhs of rupees to start communal riots in Mangalore.
  • Click here to read how Karavali Ale’s corrupt reporters blackmail businesses and collect money.
  • Click here to read how Karavali Ale poured fuel into communal riots by publishing inflammatory and false reports. Same post also reported how Karavali Ale was responsible for attacks on church  by publishing provocative false stories on conversion.

After all these exposes it is said that blackmail journalism by Karavali Ale is not paying much recently and circulation has been falling rapidly as more and more people became aware of Ale’s notorious reputation.

So is this an attention grabbing ploy by  B.V.Seetharam and group to increase circulation? Or a ploy to fool insurance companies to grab insurance money?Anyone who knows the history of B.V.Seetharam and Karavali Ale won’t be surprised if whole thing was a well planned move by Karavali Ale who rented some “attackers” to stage an attack his office.

B.V.Seetharam who is well known for such shrewd moves is too smart to leave whole office under the control of an old security guard in-charge of lakhs of rupees worth of equipment.

Whatever the real reasons are for the “attack” on Karavali Ale, whole incident again shows that one can’t go very far with illegal, blackmailing and sleazy journalism as practiced by Karavali Ale
